Revisions to improve TCEQ headed to Legislature next year
Environmentalists and critics of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality say the recommended changes are only a step in the right direction for the environment and public safety.SAN ANTONIO — Revisions proposed for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will be heading to the Texas Legislature for review next year, recommending the agency be a tougher, more transparent regulator.
“We were hoping for much greater reform and recommendations of the TCEQ since they have such a spotty environmental enforcement record, so we were disappointed that some of those issues weren’t taken up,” said Cyrus Reed, the conservation director of the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter — a national environment nonprofit. “That being said, we do think the decisions made today were in general a modest step forward.
The commission also included increased public access through electronic means, such as the public being able to find permits online or a notice which notifies the public of upcoming meetings.
