Ribble Valley Tories in olive branch gesture to council's Labour and Independents councillors
Ribble Valley Borough Council’s Conservative leader has offered new Labour and Independent councillors seats on community service working groups, as a gesture of political collaboration and inclusion following the local elections.
The Conservatives remain the largest group with 18 councillors. They lead Ribble Valley Council and have key committee roles. The Lib-Dems are the biggest opposition group with eight councillors. But the borough’s political scene has changed with the success of other parties at the May elections. The Conservative offer came at the Community Services Committee in a review of its smaller working groups. These look at topics in-depth then report back to the larger committee.
He said he had spoken to some Independents before. Lee Street, a Barrow and Wiswell councillor, could sit on the grants working group and John Atherton, a Whalley councillor, on the car park group. Coun Atkinson added: “Five councillors on the working groups would flatter the Labour Party. We would lose some influence on them as a Conservative gesture of collaboration and consultation.
He added: “I accept the Greens are on this committee but hopefully they will get a place elsewhere with discussions with the independents. The party which would reduce its influence the most is the Conservatives.”
