Today we look back on the Richmond Hill house explosion 10 years ago that took the lives of John and Jennifer Longworth, injured 13 more people and damaged 86 homes.

Doug Aldridge says it's hard to believe it's been 10 years since an explosion rocked the Richmond Hill neighborhood in Indianapolis.Gloria Olvey thought she was dead on the day the world exploded around her.

Olvey and her family survived the night of Nov. 10, 2012, after an explosion damaged or destroyed many homes in their Richmond Hill neighborhood. She was lucky to do so, she said, and left with a changed perspective. Two of her neighbors, John “Dion” Longworth and his wife Jennifer Longworth, were killed in the blast.

"There are people still living this,” Olvey said. “You don't just get over something like this in 10 years. Even just driving in that neighborhood today, my heart melts. It's something you live with forever."Five suspects were arrested in connection with the home explosion. Mark Leonard and his half-brother Robert Leonard Jr. were convicted of murder and dozens of other felonies in separate jury trials in connection with the home explosion.

Olvey and her then-husband were both trapped under debris, while their daughter yelled out that she was bleeding from her head. The neighbors helped Olvey’s daughter and then-husband out of the home and made sure Olvey’s second daughter had escaped on her own. Vicky Koerner now lives next door to the lots on Fieldfare Way. She and other Richmond Hill residents are looking forward to the day new homes are built there.

“It's still painful. That's why I don't think about it,” Karnes said. “It disrupted everybody's lives — that's part of it too — and it can be embarrassing because what we lost was nothing compared to others.”
