Portland, Oregon transit agency TriMet has fielded the 1st of many electric buses it hopes will eventually replace its fleet of diesel-powered people movers
It's also an ideal place to test emerging tech like the electric buses, the first of which is being made by Canadian manufacturer New Flyer. California-based bus maker Gillig will also supply the city with electric people movers.
Onboard, the bus feels pretty much like any normal modern transit bus - until it starts moving. As is to be expected from an electric vehicle, it is blissfully quiet while underway. It's also smoother than a diesel-powered bus, with no gear changes or rumbling engine. An airflow system whirs near the back of the bus, otherwise, the level of quiet while underway is remarkable.
TriMet driver José shepherds the bus through its 26-mile route. José says he enjoys driving the electric bus more than the diesel types. The driver controls for José and other electric bus drivers are normal and include the usual speedometer and hydraulic systems, but that's joined by a small touch screen that monitors battery charge and other parameters. A single safety switch on the left side of the cab activates the automated charging system.
