Connor StandingReady who is legally blind, says he is the first lawyer to come from White Bear First Nation.
StandingReady said there were key resources in place to help him through law school, like text-to-speech screen readers that allow him to navigate a computer without the use of a mouse.
After his schooling, StandingReady got an articling placement at Community Legal Assistance Services for Saskatoon Inner City Inc., where he worked for nearly 15 months. He called that time “a journey within itself,” saying that simply going to school doesn’t provide “practical knowledge or experience of what it’s actually like to practice law.Article content
Baldry said StandingReady was great with clients, while helping them with issues like addiction, disputes between landlords and tenants, and criminal charges. StandingReady is currently running for chief of White Bear First Nation, but said he has a job lined up with a Saskatoon law firm if he doesn’t get elected.
