'Outside work he was often on a march – striding across the Lancashire moorland, climbing a Scottish mountain or walking along a city canal in Manchester.'
He was a teacher and a trade unionist. But his love of the outdoors left a legacy for his local community.
In 2016 Rob had the vision to write to Bury Council's Greenspaces Officer, Paul Robinson suggesting a Friends of group be set up for Springwater Park. He wrote: "I went over to have a look and - OMG x 100 !- couldn't believe how much balsam there was lining the access road and along the Irwell, not to mention the giant hogweed ....so there's a job for some time to come."
He adds: "A Friends group would need an active social media profile to establish its presence and enable engagement and local feedback. The slog work of balsam slashing and litter picking would need to continue but at least it could be set in a wider context of promoting greater local use. A Friends group could be a minimal responsibility to launch and run ... just a vehicle."
The plaque attached to a tree stump says: "Rob Trueblood inspired and supported the community's work here in Springwater Park. His life was cut short in 2022 when he was 73. He was a teacher, trade unionist, environmental and community activist. Rob loved to be outdoors and on the move, allowing his enquiring mind to develop a rich picture of how history had shaped his surroundings."
Since forming in 2017, the Friends of Springwater Park have been keen to see the site recognised for its importance for wildlife and recreational value. It was taken over in 1844 by a London based company, and then again in 1851 by William Chambers, a cotton bleacher living at Barlow Fold, Blackford Bridge, nearby.
