Allies believe he can bridge the left-right divide in the Tory party, but some insiders question his 'chameleon-like' views
, he resigned from the Home Office in December 2023 less than a month after she lost her job and strongly criticised Rishi Sunak’s handling of the immigration system.after it suffered a historic defeat at the general election, but some members doubt whether he can tackle the rise of Reform and beat Sir Keir Starmer.
They also pointed out that Jenrick “almost directly quoted him” at his campaign launch speech on one of Poilievre’s favourite topics – housing. One former aide who worked with Jenrick described his natural politics as “centrist” and “Cameronian” – referencing former prime minister David Cameron – and dismissed suggestions that he had shifted to the right.
“In my view, his combination of having lots of credibility on the immigration issue, having resigned in principle over it, and starting from a position of being quite centrist about other stuff, is a good one when it comes to taking on Reform,” they said. There may also be some risk for Jenrick in trying to appeal to right-wing voters who have latched on to Reform demonstrated by the recent riots following the murder of three girls in Southport., and the Conservatives too have faced criticism for their campaign rhetoric on immigration just weeks before the riots began.
This was echoed by a Tory source who worked with Jenrick closely on the issue of housing for young people. “What Labour are doing is that they are changing the planning permissions and planning framework to build much less heavily in cities and much more heavily in rural areas, mainly Tory seats.”
