Major admitted to driving dangerously when he sped through an intersection with Highway 16 and crashed into a semi on Feb. 22, 2016.
At the moment Robert Major failed to stop at an intersection with Highway 16 and crashed into a semi, killing his two young sons and girlfriend, he began serving a life sentence “in a small cell existing in your mind and in your soul,” a Saskatoon King’s Bench judge said.
Court heard there are many secondary victims as well — surviving family members, witnesses and first responders. Major regularly took that route and knew there was a stop sign at the intersection of Range Road 3083 and Highway 16, Clements told court. He said Major didn’t know the sign had been recently knocked down by heavy machinery.
The cab of the truck had been ripped from the box and was severely crumpled. It took three hours to get everyone out. No one was wearing a seatbelt, court heard. Defence lawyer Brian Pfefferle said Major made stupid mistakes because he was grieving and struggling to understand the devastating trajectory of his life. He told court Major’s first priority is his now 13-year-old son, who cried as his dad was led away in handcuffs.
“I appreciate how he has always been there for him and has been an excellent role model. Robert is kind and caring, and I am lucky to have him in our lives,” she wrote.
