SAN FRANCISCO — The Rockets were still short handed when they lost to the Warriors on Friday in the first game after the All-Star break, but some relief could be on its way for the final game of the road trip.
The Rockets lost the first two games of the season series against the Trail Blazers by margins of 12 and 14 points. Since sweeping Portland 4-0 in 2017-18, Houston hasn’t won any of the past five season series. Portland will be without two key rotation players in Anfernee Simons and Justise Winslow, but may get center Jusuf Nurkic back from a calf injury.The Rockets haven’t run much this season, playing with the NBA’s 16th fastest pace and averaging the fourth-fewest fast-break points. But Silas has continued to preach pushing the pace, even while his starting backcourt has been out.
While guards certainly help control the pace, responsibility to push the ball up the floor does not lie solely with the Rockets’ ball handlers but also with other players to run ahead of the ball and get open. Five different Houston players each assisted one fast-break basket: Washington, Nix, Jae’Sean Tate, Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Sengun.Houston’s starting center had a frustrating scoring night on Friday, stymied by the size of Golden State center Kevon Looney.
