After preseason debut, Rockets' Jabari Smith Jr. gets Hall of Fame comparison from John Lucas
Rockets assistant John Lucas gave rookie Jabari Smith Jr. high praise after his preseason debut, comparing him to a young David Robinson. After a summer of 6 a.m. workouts and a week of practices, Rockets rookie Jabari Smith Jr. has impressed assistant coach John Lucas in ways that go beyond his impressive debut Sunday.
Smith made 5 of 8 3-pointers, scoring 21 points with eight rebounds in 24 ½ minutes against the Spurs. But Lucas already saw qualities that reminded him of the star in his first NBA coaching job in 1992-93 with the Spurs. “He’s scratching the surface,” Lucas said. “I think he has a chance to be really good because one of the things he can do already is shoot, and that helps our spacing on the floor. He is an elite defender already. He reminds me of a guy I coached before, David Robinson. He has that kind of demeanor and leadership about him.”
Asked what comes to mind when watching Smith, Lucas said “the third pick of the draft.” But beyond being one of the top picks of the draft, Lucas said Smith is a good fit for the Rockets’ needs. “He’s a perfect complement to our team,” Lucas said. “He’s done a lot of good positive things. The one thing in doing research on him and talking with his coaches, he likes to work. And he’s got a nasty streak in him that comes across.”
