He lost games, more than any Rockets coach in a three-year tenure. And on Monday, he is expected to lose his job as Rockets head coach.
With the second youngest roster in the NBA when the season began, and with their oldest player, Boban Marjanovic, rarely playing sparingly in less than half the Rockets games, the Rockets roster was assembled to collect, develop and evaluate young talent. They were so young, with their top selections the past two seasons, Jalen Green and Jabari Smith Jr., both 19 when starting their careers, Rockets general manager Rafael Stone had often said that the goal would be to develop a tenacious, hard-playing team, rather than to win.
That picked up considerably after the break and a team meeting in which Silas called for the determination to finish the season playing hard enough and well enough to build momentum for next season. The Rockets took their only three-game winning streak of the season, including a win over Eastern Conference leading Boston. But the lack of improvement defensively led to blowout losses in Memphis and New York.
There was improvement in some areas, in additional to individual improvement for many of the Rockets’ most important young players, including a dramatic turnaround for their youngest player, Smith, the Rockets’ first of three first-round picks last June.
