Oklahoma City Thunder's Aaron Wiggins shoots against Houston Rockets' Anthony Lamb, left, and Josh Christopher during the first half an NBA summer league basketball game Saturday, July 9, 2022, in Las Vegas. LAS VEGAS — Well, no one can say that Jabari Smith Jr. needs to learn to look for his shot more often.Smith shot badly and had an outstanding game, anyway. The summer league Rockets won because of all the things that add up when the shots do not fall.
The Rockets made plays to surge to the lead. Josh Christopher hit a running jumper to pull the Rockets to within three with 90 seconds left. Tari Eason finished a tough reverse beyond the reach of Chet Holmgren, who had blocked his previous shot, cutting the lead to one. With 27.2 seconds left, TyTy Washington hit a tough, running 7-footer for the lead.
“That’s what you need at the end of the game,” Rockets summer league coach Rick Higgins said. “That’s what you need from your best player, right? If they are going to do that late game, who’s not going to do it? So, if our best players and our highest profile players are willing to put their body on the line for their teammates, what can that make our group become?”
With Nix, Washington and Eason each having solid games, combining for 39 points, the Rockets had just enough because their defense allowed their expected top scorers time to find their touch. Higgins described Washington’s play as “fantastic.” He said Nix in the fourth quarter “showed the player he really is.
