Before he was an all-time Rockie, Charlie Blackmon was an unheralded southpaw prospect at Atlanta’s North Gwinnett High School.
So that summer, playing for the Colleyville LoneStars in a collegiate summer league, Blackmon decided to fib and tell the coach he was also an outfielder.
“The first year at Georgia Tech, I was pretty awful — I pitched one inning, I was a little bit hurt and a little bit bad,”“So that summer, I was going to tell the coach that I was a two-way player, which really wasn’t true. … But I knew the worst-case scenario was I didn’t get any hits, and then I went back to doing just pitching, which is what I was doing anyway.”
Blackmon raked for the LoneStars that summer, and when he got back to Georgia Tech, he won a job in the outfield and hit well enough to get drafted by the Rockies at No. 72 overall in 2008. He tore it up for Low-A Tri City in his debut pro season, earning a Northwest League all-star nod while breaking the Rockies’ short-season record for hits in a single season with 98. A fractured foot limited him in 2011, but he was a Rockies full-time starter by 2014, and won a batting title in 2017 while setting an MLB record for most RBIs by a leadoff hitter with 103.
