The Leeds Rhinos head coach appears to be under increasing pressure at Headingley.
As Leeds Rhinos were dished up another sobering dose of reality last week, the scrutiny surrounding Rohan Smith and his position in the Headingley hotseat ramped up once again.
There have been murmurings of discontent among some members of the playing group for a few weeks now, and collectively, they did little to dispel that with their actions on Friday night. In the closing stages of their defeat to St Helens, too many threw the towel in. They tapped out. There was little evidence to suggest that this was a team playing for their under-fire coach. Ultimately, we all know how these scenarios play out.
Perhaps the biggest frustration is that while the personnel has changed, the issues are the same. Leeds still concede far too many metres in yardage, and while they score some fabulous tries, their high-risk attacking players too often see them come unstuck. In good attacking areas, Leeds look incapable of breaking defensive lines down. You could put that down to the spine still gelling, but there is little to suggest things are improving. Smith has to take responsibility for that.
Ironically, if Leeds do change the coach, the next incumbent will find themselves in a similar position to Smith when he arrived. After a heavy recruitment drive last year, Leeds don't have the scope to make wholesale changes to their squad. They will very much inherit what they have, with limited room for manoeuvre.
