Analysis from Beth Lindop after Liverpool Women's 3-1 pre-season defeat to Manchester United
Liverpool Women ramped up their pre-season preparations on Wednesday with a trip to Women's Super League rivals Manchester United.
The Brazilian's effort came after Natasha Flint had pulled one back for the Reds, tapping home on the stroke of half time after some excellent work from Emma Koivisto down the right flank. Flint went close again after the break but it wasn't to be for Liverpool, who now have less than three weeks before they return to WSL action against Arsenal at the Emirates.
The Norwegian did, however, have a moment to forget late in the first half when she spurned a glorious opportunity to score her first Reds goal. Emma Koivisto, one of the standout performers for Matt Beard’s side against United, picked the pocket of Gemma Evans and rolled the ball into Haug’s path, but Liverpool’s newest signing lost her balance at the crucial moment and fired wide from just a few yards out.
Beard’s side started well at Carrington, with Koivisto and Missy Bo Kearns, in particular, looking lively. But Toone’s 10th-minute strike seemed to take the wind out of the visitors' sails and, when the England midfielder doubled her tally for the day just four minutes later, it looked like history was destined to repeat itself.
Yana Daniels, too, looked bright after her introduction, while fellow substitute Marie Hobinger gave Liverpool’s attack some real impetus from midfield.
