Ronald Reagan’s Daughter Says Her Father Showed “Such Courage” After His Alzheimer’s Diagnosis
that helped pull Davis out of her tailspin, she recalls. “When this happened, I suppose it could have taken me farther down that dark road,” she said, “but it actually had the opposite effect.”
“I thought, ‘My father is facing this with such courage and such grace, and my despair paled in comparison to that,’” Davis continued. “This was bigger than whatever I was going through, and it meant that I had something bigger to focus on. I wanted to be there for that.” At the start of the decade between her father’s diagnosis and his death, Davis traveled back and forth between New York and California. But for the last few years of Reagan’s life, she finally relocated to the West Coast to be closer to family.During this time, Davis, who has written multiple books on Alzheimer’s, exorcised some of the trauma from her childhood, leading to a better relationship with both parents.
. “I’d spent so many decades longing for what I was never going to get from my parents. Alzheimer’s made me realize that I had to be the one to change.”
