Rose Zhang went straight from Stanford to become one of the biggest stars on the LPGA Tour, although the timing of her arrival might hurt her chances to make the U.S. team for the Solheim Cup later this summer. At the very least, Zhang 20, might need some help.
Zhang won the Mizuho Americas Open in her pro debut earlier this month, then over the weekend was within one shot of the lead until a bogey on the 16th hole at the Women’s PGA Championship. She tied for eighth. But because of archaic LPGA policy, Zhang does not get credit for her Americas Open victory because she became a LPGA member after she won. That cost her 60 points toward the Solheim Cup. As it stands, she is 25th on the points list with at least five tournaments — two of them majors — before qualifying ends for the leading seven players. The Solheim Cup is a tournament between the top 12 women’s golfers from the U.S. and Europe.
