Houston's 2023 run ended at 7-4, one win short of an XFL Championship appearance.
The Houston Roughnecks and Arlington Renegades had seen a lot of each other by the time they kicked off for the XFL South Division championship on Saturday at TCEDU Stadium.
Houston won the first two meetings with Arlington 23-14 and 25-9 but was outplayed in the playoff, with the possible exception of a special teams unit that produced the Renegades' only turnover. Houston also could not meet its regular-season average of 24.7 points, which ranked third in the XFL. The Roughnecks managed a second-quarter touchdown, a third-quarter field goal, five punts, an interception and two turnovers on downs in 11 possessions.
"I'm probably going to sit with this loss for a while," McDonald said."I'm going to look back on these times and these moments being with these men and being with coach Wade and these great coaches, just take something away from it and really reflect on it. I don't know what the future holds, but I know that these past few months were some of the best months I've experienced playing football so far.
