Cristiano Ronaldo has already let new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim know that he cannot play down expectations at the club.
Ronaldo also suggested that the club required a comprehensive overhaul. With two league titles under his belt from his time with Sporting CP, Amorim is no stranger to the pressures of sustaining a title challenge throughout the season. "Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the league or Champions League. You have to be, to mentally say: 'Listen, maybe we don't have that potential, but I cannot say that. We're going to try.' You have to try."
Despite this, there were those within the United camp who thought Ten Hag's punishment for Ronaldo was excessive, with some suggesting it bordered on humiliation. Following an incident where Ronaldo was instructed to train separately from the main squad, Ten Hag escalated the situation by barring him from the dressing room.
"He is far away in Saudi, far away from Manchester, so everyone can have an opinion and is entitled to have an opinion, so it's okay" he said in September of this year.
