Moscow’s Garage Museum of Contemporary Art issued a statement condemning the 'conflict' in Ukraine—after it was posted, the directors responsible fled the country.

But Imhof will also no longer be staging her show, which she had been planning for a year, during which time she made several site visits to the space and dreamt up one of her free-choreographed sequences to match the physical and political setting. Currently, the installations she made for the show are packed up from the museum and stuck in transit, unable to get across the border and back to her studio in Berlin.

She added that the curatorial staff she worked with at Garage were firmly anti-war and had zero personal links to the Russian oligarchy. On the contrary, Imhof asked them to issue some kind of a statement pushing back against the war, and they readily agreed—writing what became the February 26 Instagram post, despite the fact that any form of protest against Putin’s actions could result in a 15-year jail sentence.

Right now, even with the shows not happening, the museum is open. And that might not be a bad thing. On Instagram, young Muscovites are eating at the cafe, hanging in the library, and taking selfies with artworks on display. In a city where many young citizens oppose the warmongering and xenophobia of their country’s forever president, Garage could be the one of the last places in town to experience unfiltered, uncensored contemporary art.

…The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation decamped from Gagosian seven years ago for a trio of galleries around the world: Pace, Thaddaeus Ropac, and Luisa Strina, the oldest contemporary art gallery in Brazil.
