Russia's president spoke from Moscow's Red Square. An airstrike on a Luhansk region school left dozens buried under rubble and feared dead.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking from Moscow’s Red Square at the start of a military pageant, did not use a Victory Day speech to announce plans to intensify the war against Ukraine or order a mobilization of men to fight, as Ukrainian officials had feared.

The United States and Western allies, while backing Ukraine and funneling in weapons and aid, have not entered the fight directly. The parade began with eight goose-stepping soldiers in dress uniform bearing the Russian flag and red Soviet-era victory banner. Triumphal military music rose as Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stood in the back of an open-topped convertible, saluting and congratulating military formations.

Directly addressing military members at the square before a minute of silence, Putin said Victory Day represented a “triumph for our united Soviet people.”
