Certainly Russia-aligned countries in the area, Mali and Burkina Faso, which have both recently had military coups and expelled French and British troops in favour of Wagner partnerships, have declared their support for the military junta in Niger.

Though Dr Siegle represents a US government that is eager to maintain Western influence on the continent, he dismisses as Russian disinformation the suggestion that the West’s colonial past with these African countries is a driving factor behind France and the UK being evicted from the Sahel. “You don’t have rule of law with these juntas that can’t run economies, and you’re going back to the 1960s or 1980s, and that didn’t work out very well,” concluded Dr Siegle on the ultimately negative impacts of Russian influence on democracy and prosperity in Africa., however, saw far less engagement from Africa than expected with only 17 heads of the 54 African states attending – down from 43 who attended the first conference in 2019.
