Rutgers’ Eric LeGrand on his latest health scare: ‘I was gone’

Big turnout at Rutgers for Eric LeGrand's 9th annual Walk to BelieveHe had visited the emergency room once on Feb. 14 with pain in his right side, convinced he had appendicitis, and returned two days later when the symptoms worsened. During that second trip, soon after doctors moved him to a bed, he started to panic.

“I can’t breathe,” he told his mother, Karen, who was at his side at Hackensack Meridian Health in Edison. “Mom, I’m about to pass out.”He blacked out. That was the start of a two-week ordeal that the formerplayer described as “easily” his biggest health scare since the 2010 on-field collision that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. He was put on a ventilator for five days as doctors diagnosed him with a rare strain of pneumonia that quickly spread through his lungs.

He needed one surgery to drain his right lung, then another after his left lung collapsed because of pressure from the ventilator — a “few life-saving procedures” he called them. Doctors told him that it was only his strength — both in body and in spirit — that keptfrom ending with an outcome that no one in the Rutgers community even wants to consider.Of course, this being LeGrand, that last part was punctuated with his patented laugh — “HA HA HA!” — and positive attitude.

LeGrand didn’t tell many people about his hospital stay. Anyone following his Twitter feed, in fact, would have thought that everything was fine. He had his partners in his new business venture —— post a photo of him chomping on a powdered donut that is part of a gift box that is available on the company’s website.

He instructed them to do that while “drugged out on the ventilator,” pecking out his instructions on a computer. “I’m over here dying, but you know how it goes, the business never stops,” LeGrand said, before, of course, that laugh. This is not LeGrand’s first trip to the emergency room. They are a part of life for someone with a significant spinal-cord injury.
