The sister of headteacher Ruth Perry held back tears as she spoke of her relief that one-word Ofsted inspection grades will be scrapped.

Shadow education secretary Damian Hinds said scrapping the 'vital' headline inspection outcome 'is not in the best interest of pupils or parents'. It said this will 'provide parents with a full and comprehensive assessment of how schools are performing and ensure inspections are more effective in driving improvement'.
Unions have long campaigned for Ofsted reform but it gathered momentum after the tragic death of headteacher Ruth Perry, who took her own life while waiting for an Ofsted report which had downgraded her school. But last night, the Labour-run Department for Education said they 'fail to provide a fair and accurate assessment' of overall school performance and are supported only by a 'minority' of parents and teachers.
From early 2025, the Government will also introduce 'Regional Improvement Teams' to work with struggling schools. The Government could intervene if a school is judged to be 'inadequate' in one of four areas, the Education Secretary has said.Ms Phillipson told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that action could be taken this year if a school is rated as 'inadequate' in any of the four sub-categories.
The 53-year-old took her life last year as she awaited publication of an Ofsted report which she knew had downgraded her Caversham Primary in Reading from 'outstanding' to 'inadequate'.
