A judge at the High Court in Edinburgh told McCabe, 49, that his victim’s three sons and wider family had suffered a “devastating loss” following the fatal attack last year.
The court heard Mr Maloney was stabbed twice in the neck, severing a jugular vein, and died in hospital from a blood clot following emergency surgery.The judge said that during McCabe's earlier trial, he appeared to have sought to discredit Mr Maloney's character in a bid to excuse his own behaviour.
The court heard there had been an altercation between the two men, and Mr Maloney had an axe which he swung at McCabe and struck him on the arm.Death row inmate fights being 'test subject' for new execution method The court heard that prior to the attack, the victim had reportedly talked about doing something to one of McCabe's daughters, which made him angry.
McCabe accepted that he had gone out armed with the blade but claimed it was a"massive, massive regret".McCabe had denied murdering Mr Maloney but was found guilty by a jury following a trial last month. He was sentenced on Monday. Lord Scott said:"CCTV footage showed you striding quickly towards Mr Maloney as you pulled out a large knife in a manner inconsistent with your claim that you merely reacted to what he did."
