Ryan Redington was the first Iditarod musher to reach the Bering Sea coast today. “It’s like a childhood dream coming alive,” said Redington, the grandson of one of the race founders.
Paul Ivanoff III presents Ryan Redington an award as the first musher to the Bering Sea Coast. Redington thanked the crowd that had gathered to watch, noting that his mother was born in Unalakleet. Redington ran the marathon 85-mile portage trail from Kaltag nonstop and arrived in Unalakleet at 4:20 a.m., three-quarters of the way into the race.
Redington called the trail from Kaltag “really perfect” and said his dogs handled the challenge well. “Now the racing starts,” he said. “If you’re gonna win this race you can’t step back. And they’re not gonna hand it over to you.”
