Flights are likely to cost more this summer with supply affected by Boeing delays, aviation experts told i
has said it suffered pre-tax losses of $164m in the first quarter of this year, which it blamed on having to ground its Boeing 737 Max 9 fleet for three weeks for safety inspections following the Alaska Airlines incident.he thought Boeing would end up paying United and other businesses affected by the grounding of aircraft for safety checks and the delay in delivery of new ones ordered.“It will clearly damage their finances over time but how they account for that is yet to be seen.
And he said the company had “adjusted our fleet plan to better reflect the reality of what the manufacturers are able to deliver”.Michael O’Leary, the low-cost airline’s CEO, announced last month that the Irish firm would receive only 40 of the 57 aircraft it had ordered from Boeing that were due to be delivered before the end of June this year, forcing it to cut flight frequency this summer.
Asked if he expected flight prices to rise, he said: “Not significantly but as always the principles of supply and demand apply, and demand remains strong. “I imagine they have some sort of agreement with Boeing – what that looks like is unclear,” he said “It may be Ryanair has similar clauses to Alaska or will ask for more favourable deals on future orders. But he didn’t expect the compensation claims to spell the end for Boeing, saying it had diversified within the aircraft industry and had military interests as well as commercial.
“It’s similar to what happened after Covid, when demand came back and airlines weren’t ready to meet that demand,” he said. “Luckily, it’s not a global issue, as it was back then.”
