A former Ryanair colleague described Matthew as a 'breath of fresh air' who was 'always smiling'
A former colleague of the two Ryanair pilots who died in a car crash on the M62 earlier this week has paid an emotional tribute. Captain Matthew Greenhalgh, 28, and Senior First Officer Jamie Fernandes, 24, were travelling to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in a taxi when the crash occurred at 5.31am on Thursday, July 11.
Former Ryanair cabin crew member Riley Patrick, who worked at Liverpool John Lennon Airport for two years before leaving last year, told the ECHO how Matt had been a "breath of fresh air" every time he walked into work. The 21-year-old said: "Matt was a breath of fresh air and was always smiling. It's such a big loss. It's all just quite surreal. Because he was the captain and I was cabin crew he was always in charge so we all kind of looked up to him.
According to Mr Fernandes's LinkedIn profile, he had been a first officer for the airline since May this year, having previously served as junior first officer and second officer. He studied at Buckinghamshire New University and the independent Bolton School, before taking his pilot's licence at Quebec-based company CAE.
