London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced plans to build at least 6,000 rent-controlled homes by 2030 for key workers earning less than £67,000 annually. These homes aim to be genuinely affordable, with rents capped and wage-increase aligned.
Sadiq Khan has put forward plans to construct rent-controlled homes exclusively for key workers earning less than £67,000 annually. The London Mayor aims to develop at least 6,000 'Key Worker Living Rent' homes by 2030, addressing the city's housing crisis . According to Khan, these homes will be affordable, potentially saving key workers up to £600 monthly on rent. Eligible professions include solicitors, barristers, judges, actors, authors, psychologists, and senior police officers.
The homes will be available for rent to any key worker with an annual income up to £67,000, which is the threshold for intermediate rented housing in London. Rents will be capped at 40% of a typical key worker's household income after tax and will increase with wages. Khan has initiated a consultation on these proposals, seeking feedback from key workers and developers
