The Saints manager was linked with the Hibs vacancy by the bookies but Nick Montgomery has been hired by the Easter Road outfit.

John Needham believes St Mirren’s forethought in tying manager Stephen Robinson down to a new contract has already paid dividends this season.

Speaking exclusively to the Paisley Daily Express, Needham said: “I was absolutely delighted for Robbo to pick up the manager of the month award for August. “He absolutely deserves the recognition that he’s getting and, of course, that often leads to being linked with other clubs. “We believe we’ve done all we can to keep him. We’ve backed him in the transfer window as much as we possibly could and he works very well with Jim Gillespie and Keith Lasley on the football board.

While paying out a transfer fee is always a risk for a club of St Mirren’s size, Needham believes Robinson’s belief in Northern Ireland international McMenamin is already looking to have been safely placed.“We hung on to our key players and I’d say we have a more balanced squad now. We’ve reshaped it and strengthened in key areas, particularly adding some more pace and width.
