Previewing the Saints run defense against New England's ground game in Week 5.
The New Orleans Saints try to get back on the winning track when they play at the 1-3 New England Patriots on Sunday. New Orleans comes in at 2-2, losers of two straight after falling 26-9 at home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
New Orleans faces a New England offense that's struggled every bit as much as their own. The Patriots average 320 total yards per game, ranking 17th, but their 13.8 points per game ranks a lowly 30th. They've scored less points each game, culminating with a 38-3 loss at the Dallas Cowboys last week. It was the worst margin of defeat in coach Bill Belichick's 29-year head coaching career.
Third-year RB Rhamondre Stevenson leads the way for the Patriots backfield. Stevenson is a punishing runner at 6-feet and 227-Lbs. and is coming off a career-best 1,040 yards in 2022. He's been kept under wraps this season, managing just 164 yards on the ground and 2.7 per carry while being held to less than 60 yards in all four games.
New England's offensive line doesn't have household names, but is a physical group that can open inside running lanes. Most of their success comes over their left side, where LT Trent Brown and LG Cole Strange maul defenders for their runners. New Orleans has one of the NFL's top duos of linebackers in Demario Davis and Pete Werner. The two lead the team in both total tackles and solo stops. Each are extremely physical at the line of scrimmage with the speed to chase down runners before they get to the edge.
Star DE Cameron Jordan remains one of the league's top edge defenders against the run. On the other side, Carl Granderson is excellent in pursuit of the ball down the line, but can be pushed off the point of attack by physical blockers. Tanoh Kpassagnon provides solid depth along the edge.
