Salford council is spending millions of pounds funding temporary housing for people facing homelessness.
Housing has become a major problem in Salford, with mayor Paul Dennett declaring a crisis in January after record levels of homelessness. The council was forced to open an emergency overnight shelter just before Christmas last year to try and help growing numbers facing life on the streets.
A report on the situation was shared with Salford council’s cabinet team on November 26. Deputy mayor John Merry said the council’s frontline services are becoming more expensive to fund each year, particularly children’s services and adult social care. Tory leader Robin Garrido said this could help residents through the colder months, adding that some parts of the building should be demolished to make way for new homes in the long term.
