In the Bahamas’ overcrowded Fox Hill Prison, up to six men must share a small cell, sleeping on the bare floor and using a bucket for human waste, according to human rights reports.
In this screengrab from an interview with ABC News is Sam Bankman-Fried, former CEO of the failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The interview, which appeared on the program Good Morning America, took place in the Bahamas island of Nassau where FTX was headquartered. Sam Bankman-Fried may have cultivated an air of not caring about the luxuries he could afford by becoming a billionaire cryptocurrency mogul.
The charges allege wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy and violation of campaign finance laws. The Securities and Exchange Commission also has accused Bankman-Fried of diverting billions of dollars invested by FTX customers into his private hedge fund, Alameda Research, allegedly to finance a lavish style in the Bahamas, buy up luxury property and donate to political candidates in order to influence public policy.
The rate of imprisonment in the Bahamas is one of the highest in the world, with 409 per 100,000 people detained in the country,The sheer number of Bahamian prisoners means Fox Hill is overcrowded and conditions at the facility suffer as a result. Prisoners also complained that they were denied anything but sporadic access to medical and psychological care and proper nutrition, the report said. Male inmates who were sick or had disabilities had inadequate access to the medical center. The prison also has been accused of contributing to COVID-19 outbreaks by failing to quarantine COVID-19-positive prisoners from the general population and by failing to provide prisoners with timely access to the vaccine.
