More than 6,000 families in need were expected to receive from thousands of toys, groceries and clothing in 26th annual giveaway event
Lioli Miranda knew waking up her five daughters at 6 a.m. on Saturday and taking the 7 a.m. hour-long bus ride from Lincoln Park to Point Loma would pay off.
While some wore masks, there were no car windows and six-foot-distance placards that separated people from hugging, giving each other high-fives and laughing together. With help from Feeding San Diego and other community donations, Rock Church distributed about 45,000 pounds of groceries, including turkeys, fruits and vegetables. There were also mountains of toys, ranging from soccer balls to bicycles and dolls, and clothing items families could freely select from. Last year, the Church distributed about 12,500 articles of clothes and shoes, 18,000 toys and more than 240,000 pounds of food.
He was one of several hundred volunteers — from the church and local schools and businesses — who donned sparkly reindeer antlers, knee-high elf socks and Santa hats for the event. They were tasked with spreading holiday cheer and making sure no family left empty-handed. They also helped run the “family zone,” a designated area for arts and crafts, face painting, dance competitions and colorful bounce houses.
“I do what I can, but when it comes to waking up in the morning with presents, that’s never been something I’ve been able to do, or birthday parties, because of financial stuff,” the Old Town resident said. “I can barely even keep my head above water, with myself raising my kids.”
