Samsung has introduced the SmartTag 3. The new tracker supports iOS in addition to Galaxy devices – but apparently not Google’s “Find my device” network.
The third generation of the Galaxy SmartTags is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, according to Samsung. They are scheduled to be released in Germany early next year – apparently similar to.
Unlike Google’s tracker, which works in the “Find my device” network of all Android devices, Samsung’s tracker only supports Galaxy devices – and for the first time, iOS. Samsung has apparently thoroughly revised the SmartTag 3 compared to its predecessor. According to the manufacturer, it is 35 percent smaller and 33 percent lighter. Samsung has also changed the shape: instead of the mini bottle opener design of the SmartTag 2, the new tracker is simply square with rounded corners.
It is offered in black and white and can be used as a keyring with accessories. The accessories in the form of a silicone case with a key ring and a loop case are available in various colors. , the Galaxy SmartTag 3 supports iOS devices from iOS 17 for the first time, in addition to Galaxy devices. This makes the tracking gadget cross-platform in a way – central location and sharing functions are supported on iOS.
However, Google’s “Find my device” network remains excluded. According to Samsung, itsAmong the functions of the SmartTag 3 is the Compass View, already known from its predecessor, now improved, which, thanks to Bluetooth 6.0 channel sounding, is said to provide distance and direction information from up to 60 meters away in clear sight. According to Samsung, this is about three times farther than with its predecessor.
With a device that supports Ultra-Wideband , location tracking is said to be even more precise. In addition, the new tracker supports proactive functions such as Place Notification: Users can “define individual zones and automatically receive a notification as soon as a tagged item moves into or out of these areas,” the company explains. The tracker also offers a location history to retrace where it has been in the past few days.
The motion detection sounds an alarm as soon as unexpected movement is detected, Samsung explains. It also integrates an NFC-based lost mode for contact information, a left-behind warning that automatically alerts when the connection between the mobile device and the tag is lost, and SmartThings IoT control. With the latter, predefined smart home routines for compatible networked devices can be triggered at the touch of a button directly on the tag.
Some of the SmartTag 3’s functions, such as Compass View, “Call phone” , and the left-behind warning, are not supported on iOS devices. iPhone users are better served with AirTags, but the SmartTags3 could be quite useful for households with iPhones and Samsung Galaxy devices. Like its predecessor, the Galaxy SmartTag 3 is protected against dust and water according to IP67 and offers a battery life of up to 550 days; in power-saving mode, it should last up to 790 days.
It is powered by a replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery. Samsung has not yet announced a price for Germany. In South Korea, the tracker costs 44,000 won , and in the USA it is priced at $29.99.
