Filling up the food bank's 50 diesel trucks is proving more difficult with the rising prices of gas.
PUBLISHED 3:18 PM CDT May. 20, 2022SAN ANTONIO — Picking up and delivering food donations is coming at a higher cost. Kevin Reyes is a truck driver in his hometown of San Antonio.Looking closely, you’ll realize Reyes was born a little different. But hearing aids didn’t stop him from earning his CDL, then being hired by the San Antonio Food Bank.
Two to three times a week Reyes gases up his truck. So he’s noticed gas prices are reaching record highs. According to AAA, the average price for regular unleaded gas is $4.27 a gallon. And diesel fuel is up to $5.25 — a growing concern for the food bank, which has 50 diesel trucks. With kids on summer break, they expect the demand to rise. But with higher overall cost, clients are getting smaller portions.
