San Antonio Independent School District’s final list of school closures reflects the undeniable and inescapable reality of declining enrollment. No one wants to see any school closed, but half-vacant campuses are a disservice to students. Superintendent Jaime Aquino has presented. Competition from charter and private schools, and historic underfunding from the state have not helped enrollment at school closure plan, stating, “I have heard overwhelmingly from community members that they want to reduce this number of school closures, and that they want additional time to create plans to save their schools.” Seven schools in his congressional district were initially proposed for closure: Collins Garden Elementary, Lamar Elementary, Pershing Elementary, Tynan Early Childhood Education Center, Ogden Elementary, Nelson Early Childhood Center and Storm Elementary.
