He shot at officers and killed a police dog named Chucky. On Friday, he was sentenced to three life terms in prison.
After a six-day trial, a Bexar County jury in December found Mireles, 42, guilty of eight counts of aggravated assault of a public servant, interference with a police service animal and evading arrest and detention.Mireles' odyssey began in Karnes City on Jan. 25, 2019, when police there tried to pull him over and arrest him on several outstanding warrants.
Once in San Antonio, Mireles left his vehicle near Loop 1604 and Texas 151, all the while shooting at officers, including Bexar County sheriff's deputies handling Chucky, a service dog who was deployed quickly and without his protective vest. He still bit and held on to Mireles, who shot him a second time, killing him. Deputies shot and wounded Mireles, arresting him on multiple charges.in a miles-long procession, the casket carried in a horse-drawn carriage.
Authorities said Mireles had nine prior felony convictions and had been a member of the Mexican Mafia, rising to the rank of lieutenant over a 22 year period in the prison gang. He was sentenced as a habitual offender.
