Move has no legal impact, but council calls it important symbolic gesture with Roe overturn possible.
Concerned that the U.S. Supreme Court might soon eliminate the constitutional right to abortion, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to declare the city a safe place for “reproductive freedom and access to abortion.”
But Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, who spearheaded the effort, said San Diego has a responsibility to show that it is a safe city where every citizen and visitor will have reproductive freedom and access to abortion. Abortion rights have become a hot topic since early May, when a draft Supreme Court opinion overturning the landmark 1973 Roe vs Wade decision was leaked. If the federal right to an abortion is eliminated, the rules and regulations governing abortion would fall entirely to individual U.S. states.
Councilmember Dr. Jennifer Campbell said the Roe decision is so crucial because it protects the right to an abortion without government interference.
