San Diego City Council OKs Police Department's continued use of military equipment [Breaking]
San Diego City Council members on Tuesday approved an ordinance that allows the city’s Police Department to continue using military equipment and to request more gear in the future.
In accordance with the law, the San Diego Police Department drafted a military equipment policy which outlines its inventory, the purpose of each piece of equipment, associated costs and and other information. “The San Diego Police Department is respectfully asking this council to certify the continued use of the safety equipment outlined in this presentation,” Grubbs said. “Each piece of equipment is critical for the departments ability to maintain public safety.”About a dozen speakers urged City Council members to deny the department’s request, arguing that military equipment isn’t needed and can create an oppressive show of force when used in neighborhoods, particularly communities of color.
