Mt. Carmel High alum played in Germany for 15 years before transitioning to the sideline
Steve Cherundolo grew up in San Diego, attended Mt. Carmel High, played for the La Jolla Nomads youth soccer club, spent two years at the University of Portland, then left for a pro career in Germany in 1999 and a storied career with the U.S. national team that included three World Cup rosters.
“There were no guarantees or plan there,” Cherundolo says. “There was a little bit of a leap of faith. It also, maybe on my part, was having confidence in my skills and understanding that, if people are watching and you coach the right way, then you’ll be rewarded.” It’s a measured response by a measured man, a life view honed by two decades in Germany, a perspective informed by 423 appearances for Hannover 96 and 87 as a right back for the U.S. national team, including 390 of a possible 390 minutes at the 2010 World Cup. He understands soccer. He understands expectations. He understands patience.
It wasn’t until his second season that he discovered a passion for it and decided to continue. Plan B: Becoming a history and politics teacher, either at the high school or university level.
