After Easter services on Sunday at a chapel in North Park, Max Zaiets opened his smartphone to show pictures of a how the war in Ukraine was affecting his relatives in the northern city of Chernihiv.
“My mom said Russians were everywhere,” he said. “They steal food from Ukrainians because Putin doesn’t feed his soldiers. I asked them to get out from there. They said no. It is our land.” Gregory Teslar, 74, a retired pharmaceutical chemist, came to San Diego recently from Ukraine with his wife, Olha, 66, to stay with a relative. In broken English, he stressed that Ukraine has a distinct culture and values that Russia is trying to erase.Bohdan Kniahynyckyj, who came to the U.S. in 1951 and is active in the Ukrainian Catholic Church and House of Ukraine cultural museum in Balboa Park, estimates San Diego Ukrainian community has about 10,000 people.
Askold and Nadia Haywas, who came the U.S. years ago, traveled to Ukraine earlier this month to help deliver those supplies. They stayed with relatives for seven days in western Ukraine, which has escaped much of the fighting to date. But fortified check points are everywhere, they said, and air raid sirens blared several times a day.
