San Diegans will honor survivors and victims of residential boarding schools for Indigenous children during Orange Shirt Day events on Friday and Saturday.an art installation in front of Hepner Hall from 12 to 3 p.m. on Friday. The growing art piece, which was started last year, features a 47-foot canvas scroll stamped with footprints to represent the children brought to residential schools throughout the nation.
On Saturday, an educational event will be held at the Waterfront Park outside the County Administration Center downtown from 4 to 8 p.m.Orange Shirt Day was established in 2013 by a Canadian nonprofit to honor victims and survivors of residential schools throughout North America. The schools were populated by Indigenous children who were removed from their homes and communities — usually against the wishes of their families — with the goal of forcibly assimilating them into European American culture. Once at the schools, staff cut the children’s traditionally long hair, changed their names to English ones and forbade them from practicing their Native languages, cultural traditions or religion.
On Tuesday, the Department of the Interior announced an oral history project to document and publicize the stories of Indigenous children who experienced the federal boarding school system throughout the course of the 1800s and 1900s. The oral history project is part of a Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative launched by Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland in June 2021 to study the scope and intergenerational impact of these schools.
