San Francisco delayed a planned reopening of hair salons and outdoor bars, while Newsom pushed a southern border county to lock down again as rising numbers threaten to reverse months of progress against the coronavirus in the nation’s most populous state
because its geography and conditions are so diverse. His office issued data showing that some rural Sierra Nevada counties are seeing very low positive test rates even as numbers surge hundreds of miles away in Southern California.
“We are now in a position where we are working with county officials and advising them to pull back and once again reinstitute their stay-at-home orders,” Newsom said. The decision to impose a new stay-at-home order ultimately falls to Imperial County officials, and Newsom said he was “confident” they would do so. But if they cannot, he said the state would get involved.
While Newsom has said that California has sufficient hospital capacity and enough ventilators to absorb a surge, the trend lines have alarmed county health officials who fear their early successes in slowing the virus’ spread are slipping away. Newsom mandated Californians statewide to wear masks last week and struck a more urgent tone this week in imploring Californians to continue maintaining distance, wear masks and wash their hands to stave off a resurgence.
