San Jose: Authorities identify teenager driver killed in fiery crash on I-280
SAN JOSE — Authorities identified the driver and passenger killed in a crash last month on Interstate 280 after the driver careened off the roadway and crashed into a tree.
The crash occurred at about 10:50 p.m. Feb. 15, when the driver of a white pickup truck — identified as 18-year-old Samuel Marin Cendejas Jr. of San Jose — was traveling in the left lane on northbound 280, just north of 7th Street, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee. Cendejas was driving “at a high speed” and swerved to the right, colliding with the back of a vehicle in the next lane.
Cendejas Jr. drove across lanes before leaving the roadway and crashing into a tree on a brushy slope above Margaret Way, police said. The truck caught on fire. Cendejas Jr. was pronounced dead by San Jose fire personnel. The passenger of the vehicle, Kelly Denise Melendrez Santiago, a 19-year-old San Jose resident, was taken to a hospital with injuries and later died.
