SAN LEANDRO — A man who tried to rob a convenience store with a gun fired a single shot at officers trying to arrest him and briefly threatened to commit suicide before managing to evade a perimeter Monday, authorities said.
In a statement, police said officers responded to a call around 3:45 a.m. reporting the robbery attempt at 7-Eleven, 333 E. 14th St., and spoke to two people who said a man pointed a gun at them and demanding their belongings, but fled the store without taking anything. As officers spoke to the victims, they noticed the man, still holding a handgun with an extended magazine, across East 14th Street. Officers tried to stop the man, running two blocks west after him until the suspect stopped and fired a lone shot at them. No officers were struck or injured, police said.
Moments later, other officers managed to catch up to the man in the 100 block of Durant Avenue, where he pointed his gun at himself and threatened to commit suicide. Using their crisis-intervention training, officers worked to de-escalate the moment, until the man lowered his handgun and again fled on foot.
Officers set up a perimeter around the area to search for the man, who was not found. A handgun with a clip was later found in the 100 block of East 14th Street. Police detectives returned to the convenience store to recover surveillance-camera footage and other evidence of the robbery attempt.Contact George Kelly at 408-859-5180.
