San Marcos Police Department is giving away wheel locks for residents who own Hyundai or Kia models that are susceptible to theft.

in the city in response to an increase in car thefts, according to the department’s official Facebook page.

A Facebook post by SMPD told residents a limited number of steering wheel locks would be available “free of charge” on a first-come, first-served basis as of Friday at the San Marcos Police Department to owners of certain Hyundai and Kia models. Some Hyundai and Kia models that use a key to start the vehicle are vulnerable to theft by breaking off the ignition cycle and starting the engine with a USB cable or screwdriver.

San Marcos residents who own the following Hyundai or Kia models are eligible for a free steering wheel lock:
