New fees at the Port of Vancouver are expected to cost grain shippers an extra $11.5 million per year.

According to the port’s fee schedule, rates will depend on which shore that products are exported from. Fees will range from eight to 40 cents per tonne for bulk, non-containerized cargo, which includes grain and potash. These products are shipped out of the North Shore, South Shore, Roberts Bank and Fraser River.

“There is no system that is collaboratively funding infrastructure like this,” she said. “It is a competitive advantage for the nation.” The person said the added costs will be passed down to farmers, but how much producers will pay extra is hard to predict. “There’s been a boatload of government money spent at the Port of Vancouver to improve things there,” he said. “They should be working within the confines they’re already receiving.”

When asked about potential alternatives to fee hikes, Eyre wondered if there is a fairer way of allocating the levies or whether they’re needed.Article content
