Health Canada, the country’s medical regulator, announced Thursday morning it gave the green light for Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for children aged six months to five years, the first vaccine against the virus to be approved for that age group.
“We will announce the plans to deliver these vaccines throughout the province before they arrive, to permit families to plan to have their children vaccinated as soon as possible,” reads a prepared statement from the Ministry of Health. The approval is a long-awaited step for parents of young children, one of the only demographics that was yet ineligible for a COVID-19 vaccine.Health Canada says vaccines for children aged 6 months to five years will be offered in a two-shot series, with the second shot coming four weeks after the first.
“The clinical trial showed that the immune response to Spikevax in children 6 months to 5 years of age was comparable to that seen in people 18 to 25 years of age from a previous study,” Health Canada said.Article contentMore detailed data published to its website said the vaccine was 37 per cent effective in preventing COVID-19 among participants aged 2 to 5 years older and 51 per cent effective in participants aged 6 to 23 months old.
