The powerful World War II action-drama, Saving Private Ryan, finally gets an Honest Trailer, which points out a major flashback problem. Written by Robert Rodat and directed by Steven Spielberg, the war film follows Captain John H. Miller who leads a small detachment across France to locate and recover Private First Class James Francis Ryan after his four brothers were killed in action.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Screen Junkies' latest Honest Trailer takes aim at Spielberg's World War II masterpiece, Saving Private Ryan, acknowledging the movie's achievements but also pointing out a major perceived issue with the film's flashback. The video points out that the film is framed by Ryan at the Normandy Cemetery as he remembers what happened to him during the war. However, the Honest Trailer asks how Ryan can remember details of the Cpt.
Ryan's reveal as the old veteran was surely a surprise to many, but it does create a possible incongruity regarding the veracity of the film's plot as Ryan could not possibly remember what exactly happened prior to his rendezvous with Cpt. Miller's detachment. Although there was no way Ryan could recall those details, the conclusion of the mission saw both Technician Fifth Grade Timothy Upham and Private First Class Richard Reiben survive.
Regardless, the primary use of the flashback framing in Saving Private Ryan was to leave the reveal of Cpt. Miller's fate, as well as Ryan's identity as the old man, a surprise to the audience. Whether the flashback makes complete sense is irrelevant to the effectiveness of the film's narrative.
